About ERP Systems for make-to-order (MTO) manufacturing
Make-to-order, often abbreviated as MTO and sometimes referred to as build-to-order (BTO), is a production approach where once a confirmed order for products is received, products are built. Forms of MTO vary, for example, an assembly process starts when demand actually occurs or manufacturing starts with development planning.
Make-to-order software enables you to:
- reduce inventories
- minimize lead-times
- reduce waste
- lower your cost of production
You can produce exactly what your customers want, when they want it even when your products are complicated. Other modes of manufacturing include engineer-to-order, assemble-to-order, make-to-stock, repetitive and mixed-mode. For different product lines a single company may operate in several of the modes simultaneously.
Differences in CTO, MTO and MTS manufacturing operations
In a configure-to-order (CTO) or make-to-order (MTO) business, customer lead time (CLT) serves as the primary indicator or unit of measure for defining customer service levels. The main driver of demand/supply success, and thus CLT performance, will generally be the availability of raw material components. Using various methods, a business can determine what is a competitive lead-time for receiving the order to shipping or delivering it to the customer.
In a make-to-stock (MTS) business, finished goods inventory levels expressed in day's supply of inventory (FG-DSI) or in "backorder days" serve as the performance measure for defining customer service levels. In this fulfillment strategy, customers expect to place their order and receive instant gratification in having their order shipped (i.e., less than 24 hours).
The performance measure then becomes fill rate percentage while FG-DSI or backorder days indicate your general fulfillment health or ability to satisfy customer order. In this case, the response by operations to sales or sales to the customer will be either immediate product availability or projected backorder days (days before the product will ship).
