About ERP Systems for Make-to-forecast (MTF)
In make-to-stock finished goods level oscillates between some minimum value protected by safety stock and a maximum value, usually separated by one “batch-size” worth of material. However, this is not always sufficient to protect customers especially where demand is highly variable or there is a considerable degree of seasonality in the demand. The alternative is to make-to-forecast.
The make-to-forecast manufacturing environment is characterized by the manufacture of individual, expensive-to-store units which come in alternative configurations or models. Since the production lead times are longer than customers are willing to wait, production is started in anticipation of orders for particular models and then modified while in production, if economically desirable, to match the actual customer orders. Ideally, no finished goods inventory occurs in this process. Occasionally, however, such unsold finished items are generated.
Make-to-forecast variations
- chasing: the manufacturer creates
the products when orders come in
- levelling: products are manufactured
in advance. Unsold products will be kept in stock or sold at a
reduced price
