Abstract: Since our research-driven beginnings, Johnson & Johnson Advanced Sterilization Products (ASP) has continually improved the new product development (NPD) process. Detailed process mapping has revealed three tiers of business metrics, starting with drivers and moving up through execution metrics to business performance metrics. When driver metrics improves, so does business performance. Six Sigma tools helps identify specific metrics at all tiers and the causality linkages among them. Each NPD process step at ASP results in a deliverable, and each deliverable relates to a trade-off triangle (cost-time-resources) and, ultimately, to investment dollars. To track performance, ASP calculates how actual NPD decisions and what-if scenarios affect deliverables, alter investment triangles, and thereby influence business results. ASP uses similar process and tools, including the investment triangles and Six Sigma QFD, to make idea management decisions. The IDweb real-time software environment enables both the NPD and idea management processes at ASP. By deploying the strategic planning, idea management, portfolio and pipeline management, process management, and resource management modules of IDweb, ASP has increased throughput by 20 percent and reduced cycle time by 40 percent. Abstract: Like so many Internet conventions, the Application Service Provider (ASP), is really a combination of two 'old' concepts, turn key applications and outsourced services. Many of the lessons learned from these areas are directly applicable to ASP provided applications, and many of the same questions need to be asked and answered before a determination can be made on whether an ASP application should be considered.

Abstract: Application Service Provision (ASP).There has been a trend in recent years towards the use of remote software services through application service providers. These are companies who make software applications available via the Internet to users who, rather than buying software, pay rental fees for it. The software does not have to be installed locally, the application being available through any web browser, and all support and maintenance is handled by the service provider. CMMS vendors are not the only ones offering these solutions. CAD modelling, engineering design, finance packages, purchasing, ERP and even your company Intranet can now be rented. This is an expanding sector and the signs are that major growth is about to take place. Earlier problems with slow data transfer speeds, communication costs and data security have largely been eliminated and this has made ASP a very attractive proposition. This is clearly illustrated by the proliferation of systems that have become available over the last three or four years with most of the major CMMS vendors now offering an ASP option.
Abstract: Whether an application is best implemented as an ASP provided application or service, built in-house or purchased, generally depends on the same criteria as what would be used for outsourcing a function or process. This part details that criteria.

Abstract: Our experience from conducting dozens of ERP software selection engagements recently teaches us that some number of smaller enterprises, first-time ERP buyers, opt for an ASP. Surprising, however was that an even more significant number of incumbent mid-market vendors by not addressing this trend have been handing over a big opportunity to their bigger brethren.
